RESTORATION TIPS
by Virginia Genova
this is an excerpt from the articles appearing in the EAGLE
I have a 1980 Indy Pace car that I am restoring. The car is in excellent condition with only 46,000 miles. I am in the midst of a total interior restoration. I have found out a lot of neat things you can do to make this job easier if you are a novice like me. I found that empty film canisters are great for keeping trim crews labeled correctly. All you have to do is write down where they go on the canister.
The next thing is the ease of refinishing all hard plastic/vinyl trim. I was overwhelmed at first, because all of the trim was different colors due to aging and sun damage, and I am allergic to lacquer based dyes. I was really going crazy trying to find a solution.
I had quotes of several hundred dollars to re-finish my interior trim professionally. I did want to do this myself, so for around $12.00, I found a solution! It's semi-gloss latex paint! Don’t laugh, it works great! I had a part of oyster trim scanned for the correct color match, and the color is perfect. Gloss is identical to factory items, and you cannot believe how fantastic the paint is to work with.
I am just finishing the trim now. I thought other NFTAC members would like to know that there is an alternative to messy and dangerous lacquer based vinyl dyes.
